Peter Cockrell Cemetery

Narrative

It is believed that this grave is for Peter Cockrell and the cemetery is the resting place of a few other family members (assumed) based on deed research conducted by Don Wilson. When this family lived on this property it was about 166 acres.

From a deed recorded in 1796 it seems Peter Cockrell sold 100 acres to Simon Peter Cockrell (son) that Peter received from his father, Thomas in 1772. It is written in the deed that Thomas acquired the property in 1754. In at least 1835 the property was still owned by the Cockrell family, 81 years of family ownership.

From an Ancestry.com family tree, it appears that Peter Cockrell (Moses’ father), died 18 July 1803, in Prince William County. No source is given. His birth is estimated as 1725. His father was Thomas Cockrell (born 1699) who married Elizabeth Ramey “probably ca. 1721.” The family lived in Northumberland County, Virginia, until about 1750. Peter married Frances Carter about 1766, daughter of Sarah (Muse) who m (1) ---- Carter, (2) William Thorn and (3) Henry Wilson of Prince William County.

We don’t know whether the stone or the family record is more accurate for the date of death. The birth date on the stone is probably based on a belief in an exaggerated age.

A family tree on Ancestry.com says Moses Cockrell was born about 1783, son of Peter Cockrell and Frances Carter. He died 28 Sept. 1828 in Prince William County (possibly buried in this cemetery). His wife was Sarah Jane Johnson (1790-1861) a daughter of Rutt Johnson of Clover Hill farm. She died at Bloom Hill farm.
